The Hating Game

By Sally Thorne

Book is rated 2 / 5 stars.

I struggled with this one; having seen the movie, I feel like that was really the push that got me to finish this book. Parts were good, and other parts had me debating on if I wanted to put it down. The saving grace, really, was knowing how it would end and needing to get there. because it was such a short book. Plus, it was my first attempt at reading on a Kindle (fun fact, I bought a Kindle right after). There are spoilers ahead, so if you haven't read the book, be prepared.

Book Tropes

Workplace Romance. Enemies. Opposites Attract.

Spice Level: 2 / 5.

The Plot

The writing was mediocre - it read a little like a word vomit type of book with little flow. Don't get me wrong, I looooove the overall storyline. Two people who hate each other, turns out they love each other? God, I eat that shit up. But, something about the way this book transitioned had me questioning a lot of things.

There were a lot of parts that were good, and I laughed and I was amused, and I was squealing a little. But, not enough to erase the rest of it, if that makes sense. I would recommend reading it in the same way I would recommend someone reading something that is their only option. Sadly, this is one of those books where the movie did it better.

Both Lucy and Josh did have a lot of redeeming qualities about them; I enjoyed their character flow, and the way in which they grew together and became better for each other. I loved that he took care of her when she was sick, and enjoyed her company in his house. But, Lucy was a little conflicting for me. I wasn't sure what it was about her that I wasn't a fan of; she was endearing in the beginning, but the more it progressed, the more it seemed like the only reason who got in her way was herself. That is a common theme with people, I understand that - I do it, too. But, the level within this book just seemed like she spun herself into situations that she could have avoided.

Final Thoughts...

Do I want another stab at this book? Maybe at some point, I'd give it another go. But, chances are, I'd rather just watch the movie again. There were definitely parts I enjoyed. This wasn't a book I would have actually avoided finishing. I'm glad I finished it. But, it also lacked something for some reason. Unsure why. I would like to give her another shot, ultimately.
