A Court of Frost and Starlight

Updated: Apr 1, 2023

By Sarah J. Maas

Book is rated 4.5 / 5 stars.

This book was a quick, easy, light read. To be honest, after the gut-wrenching emotions that the last book clawed out of me, this was a welcome delight. But, at the same time, it definitely wasn't my favorite. It was almost like reading a one-shot fanfic but in the most beautiful way imaginable. There are spoilers ahead, so if you haven't read the book, be prepared.

The Quick Read

So, we know that this book was meant to be a slight. break in the story - not really drag through the series. The intent was to create a bridge between Book 3 and Book 5. Before you really read Book 5, however, it doesn't make sense. Once you start diving into A Court of Silver Flames, it does come together.

Reading it immediately after A Court of Wings and Ruin really seemed to be the best move. My adrenaline was high from the last two hundred pages, so finding something that was still angst driven but layered in sweetness and togetherness was so lovely!

I also really enjoyed that this book took place over the span of what seemed like a few days instead of the months that drove the past two books. And, like every book before it, you fall in love with characters the more you learn about them and it has me in a tizzy to see what will happen in the next book.

The Bat Boys will forever be the characters I will love till the day I die. The natural movement of their friendship, despite everything they've endured, and continue to unite is just so beautiful. I love the moments of fluff throughout this book - with the snowball fights, to the union between Feyre and Rhys, to the delicate conversations sprinkled within the pages. But, I'm so much more intrigued by what happens next. . .

You know, with Cassian and Nesta.

I have this need to smack her, but also protect her - I don't know what to do with that. While she focuses so much on her youngest sister, the rest of them want to work on her and that is just beautiful. It breaks my heart that Cassian, after his confession, still pines for happiness and love and can't find it.

Rhys getting Feyre land to build their dream house gave me the perfect The Office vibes. You guys remember that scene where Jim buys Pam a house? But, this was infinitely better because it's Rhys and Feyre and it's...a freakin' mansion! I know that this is going to play a huge part in the future - it has to - but it also makes me yearn for the banters in the old house. Will that happen now?

Ready for Book 5

I would definitely recommend reading this book - even if it's not for super storyline progression. But, I'm sure it's there for a reason. It's a really quick read, super cute - knock it out in a few hours type of situation. But, the two moments that will forever stay with me are the snowball fight and the hot spa.

You know what I'm talking about. ;)
